Why employers request physical exams

Pre-employment exams help identify pre-existing conditions that could be aggravated by job duties, establish a baseline health record for future comparison, and reduce the likelihood of on-the-job injury. For physically demanding or safety-sensitive positions, an exam protects both the new employee and the wider workforce, and can help limit an employer’s liability by documenting the employee’s condition at the time of hire.

Pre-employment physical exam

Performed after a conditional job offer, it typically includes a review of medical history, vital signs, vision and hearing screening, and a general physical assessment relevant to the essential job functions. Employers request it to confirm, before the employee starts, that the candidate can safely perform the physical demands of the role.

Fit for duty exam

Determines whether a current employee is medically able to safely perform their specific job responsibilities, often after illness, injury or a change in duties. Employers request it when there is a concern about an employee’s ability to work safely — due to a medical condition, a recent hospitalization, or a documented performance or safety issue.

Return to work exam

Performed after an employee has been away due to an injury, illness or work comp claim, to confirm they are ready to resume duties at full capacity or with specific restrictions. It ensures a safe transition back to work, clear documentation of any temporary limitations, and less risk of re-injury.
