Who needs a DOT drug test?

DOT drug testing is required for any employee who performs a safety-sensitive function regulated by the U.S. Department of Transportation, including commercial drivers who operate vehicles requiring a CDL, and certain safety-sensitive employees in aviation, rail, transit and pipeline industries. Testing applies at pre-employment, on a random basis, after a reportable accident, upon reasonable suspicion, and before returning to duty after a violation.

What is included in a DOT drug test?

A DOT drug test is a federally standardized 5-panel urine screen conducted under chain-of-custody procedures established by 49 CFR Part 40. The panel screens for marijuana, cocaine, opioids, phencyclidine (PCP) and amphetamines. All specimens are sent to a certified laboratory, and any non-negative result is reviewed by a Medical Review Officer (MRO) before it is reported to the employer.

Why DOT drug testing matters

DOT drug testing protects public safety by ensuring that people operating commercial vehicles and other safety-sensitive equipment are not impaired by controlled substances while on duty. Because these employees are entrusted with the safety of the public and their coworkers, federal law mandates strict, standardized testing protocols.
