What you need to know
The Illinois Secretary of State requires new applicants to complete a medical examination within 90 days before applying for their school bus driver permit. School bus drivers must also undergo an annual physical examination for permit renewal.
The examination evaluates overall health and includes vision, hearing, blood pressure and other assessments to determine medical fitness to operate a school bus safely.
Urine drug testing and tuberculosis (TB) testing
- Annual compliance screening: Illinois requires annual occupational health screenings for school bus drivers, including a standard 5-panel federal/state regulatory urinalysis.
- TB test: mandatory for first-time applicants and for drivers whose permits have expired for more than 30 days.
- Renewing an active permit: drivers generally do not need another TB test unless the medical examiner determines that one is necessary.
These screenings help ensure drivers meet Illinois medical qualification requirements before transporting students.
